Oh boy, I love watching airport reunions. The anticipation as family members or friends wait behind the barriers, watching the doors open and close, open and close. Has the plane landed? How long will it take them to come through customs? Which door is it? Oh, oh! There he is! No, false alarm. Oh, oh, there she is! Yes, it’s her! Here he is! He’s here! Then the mad rush or the quiet duck through the crowds to get closer, or the smiling standstill until eye contact is made. Then the smiles and the laughs, the bunch of flowers thrust forward, then the big hug. Then the tears. Sometimes mine, even though I’m watching strangers reunite. It’s lovely.

All it needs, really, is a soundtrack, which is why I loved this video vignette when it popped up on a friend’s Facebook page last week. You may have seen it; it was actually an advertisement produced by T-Mobile in the UK in 2010. No matter, it’s great, and I cried, then watched it again. My favourite bit has to be the funny fellow shouting “Oh my God I can’t believe it! I’ve never been this far away from home!” at the bemused BAA security guard. How they got Heathrow to agree to its filming I have no idea. But I love it.

Enjoy.

One Response to “How’s this for an airport welcome?”

Love this. I too enjoy watching the hellos at airports, and love the excitement of meeting friends and family when they arrive. But to be greeted with this kind of outpouring of joy via song – how fab! It’s great that big companies can incorporate some of this type of uplifting material in their advertising… much as I usually don’t like advertising!
